August 27, 1999
Pulaski County opened their 1999
season with an impressive win over Christiansburg. The Cougars won the toss and deferred.
They held the Demons to three and out. PC scored first on a one yard run by Antoine
Meadows. Paul Taylors PAT was good with 8:14 remaining in the first.
Three plays later with 3rd and 10, Demon QB Matt Woodyard threw to the left flat and was intercepted by Frank Cobbs at Christiansburgs 24. Six plays later David Hale scored on a 4 yard run. Taylors PAT was good. PC 14-0 with 3:47 remaining in the first quarter.
The first big play of the night for the Demons came from 3rd and 9 at their own 15 when Tony Hubbard carried left on the reverse for 24 yards and a first down. Then the PC defense tightened and Paul Kirkner punted to the PC 30. The Cougars were unable to convert and Taylor was called on to punt. The Demons could not convert and elected to punt. Kirkner was met with a heavy rush and had to scamper to his right to get the punt off.
Two plays later Hale took the off tackle play right, led by great blocking from Joseph Burks at the perimeter. Hale dove into the endzone at the right corner as he was tacked on the 34 yard touchdown run. Taylor extended the lead to 21-0, with 7:27 remaining in the half.
It was three and out for the Demons. The pass on third down was almost intercepted in the flat by Frank Cobbs. On 4th and 12, the punt snap was high, and Kirkner took it back into the endzone for a safety, 23-0 Cougars.
The puntoff was fielded by Hale who carried 9 yards to the PC 45. The Cougars seemed to lose some energy here, committing two illegal procedure penalties on a 6 play drive. Cobbs took the criss cross in from 8 yards out. With Taylors PAT, the Cougars lead 30-0 with 3:28 remaining in the half.
It was three and out for the Demons. The punt looked like a deliberate fake, although not much different from the near block and safety.
On the next play Cougar QB Travis Roop dropped back to pass and was swarmed by rushers from both flanks. He kept the ball straight up the middle on a 30 yard scamper to score. Cougars 37-0 with 1:14 remaining after the successful Taylor PAT.
To open the second half PC drove to the Demon 15 where Taylor missed a field goal attempt wide left. Christiansburg had the ball three plays before lining up to punt, unsuccessfully. PC took over on downs at the Demon 20. Four plays later from the 24 Taylor missed another field goal wide left.
Christiansburg drove to Cougar territory for the first time, but failed to convert on 4th and 2 from the PC 45.
The second team played the rest of the way for the Cougars. TB Greg Cobbs carried 44 yards to the Demon 12. On the next play QB Alan Wheeling seemed surrounded in the backfield, but escaped to score on a 12 yard scamper. The PAT was good, PC 44-0.
The Demon offense put together a good drive against the second team PC defense. Woodyard passed to Steven Nagy for a 36 yard gain, to the PC 37, the biggest Demon play of the night. The Cougar second team defense rose to the occasion, stopping the Demons on 4th and 6 at the PC 16 when Joseph Radcliffe knocked away a Woodyard pass intended for Nagy.
The second team Cougar offense scored again on an 84 yard drive. FB Daniel Keith scored on a 4 yard run. The PAT finished the scoring 51-0.
"The team was together, because of playing together last year" Roop said. "We had a few penalties, but no fumbles." Roop had good rushing yards when he had to scamper away from the rush. "We need better pass protection, because I wont be able to do that all year," he said. In the second half he was slow getting up after a hard hit at the end of a run. "Im still feeling it", he said after the game.
Taylor had a good game. "Fantastic" said coach Ken Dobson. "He was 7 for 7 on PATs. This was his first game punting. He got 50 on one" Dobson added.
Coach Dan Newell liked what he saw from the linebackers in this game. "We tackled better, and we improved in reading our keys. Jesse Rakes proved that he is a quality backup who could play strong or weak middle linebacker."
Next week the Cougars have a test as they open at home against powerhouse E.C. Glass.
