Salem scored first on a 31-yard field goal by Jason Buster.

The Cougars had trouble fielding the kickoff, and it went out on the PC 2-yard line after being touched by Josh Calfee and Alan Wheeling. Two plays later Calfee carried for 35 yards to the PC 38. Two plays later Frank Cobbs scored on a 60 yard run after the criss cross. The PAT was wide right.

The Spartans took the lead for good on a 3-yard run by Dennis Haley. Buster’s PAT was good for a 10-6 Salem lead.

Calfee returned the kickoff 45 yards to the PC 47. Salem would hold and Taylor would punt, to the 3-yard line where Chris Schwizer would field the ball and run 97 yards to paydirt. Buster’s PAT made the score 17-6.

Greg Cobbs fielded the short kickoff, but stumbled as he tried to run at the PC 29. Five plays later Antoine Meadows took the dive play for 45 yards down to the Salem 10-yard line.

The Cougars had fourth and goal on the one, but a short pass to Frank Cobbs was too low, and the ball would go over on downs.

On the next play Haley took the sweep right until he turned the corner, going 99 yards to score. The PAT was good for a 24- 6 lead.

The PC offense would punt after three plays. Schwizer returned the punt to the 50. Salem drove to the 6 but would settle for another Buster field goal. Salem took the commanding 27-6 lead into the half.

Salem opened the second half with a kick off return misdirection handoff, that went the distance, but the play was called back because of a clipping penalty. On the first play from scrimmage from their own 43, the Spartans called a reverse pass, but the wide open receiver was overthrown. Pulaski would hold the series.

The Cougars drove to the Salem 24. Calfee had a 20 yard carry on the drive.

With third and 8 from the 24, Travis Roop threw under pressure for Jeff King in the endzone, but the ball fell incomplete. Taylor missed a field goal from 40 yards out.

E.J. Thomas would score five plays later for the Spartans on a 67-yard touchdown run. The PAT raised the score to 34-6.

The Spartan defense prevented a Cougar first down, and Taylor punted.

Six plays later Manuel Lewis would take the dive play for a 2-yard touchdown.

Buster would score his 11th point of the night on the PAT, 41-6.

Two possessions later the Cougars would score on the option play, as Roop pitched to Calfee for a 3 yard run. Taylor’s PAT was good, to shorten the difference, 13-41.

Salem’s second team offense came on for three plays, and then the Spartans would punt.

Roop had his neck injured on a pass play, and the officials would have both teams go to the sideline. Coach Hicks and Coach White would come onto the field to look at Roop. He would walk off under his own power.

Wheeling would come in at quarterback, against the Spartan second team defense.

Frank Cobbs scored after the criss cross from 5 yards out. Wheeling would throw his first career scoring pass to Frank Cobbs on the two point conversion, making the score look cleaner, 21-41.

Salem would fumble the kickoff at the 34 after a good return. Wheeling threw deep down the left sideline on the last play, but Salem intercepted, and would run out the clock.

"We’re suffering from the loss. But we’re going to come back Monday and get ready for Bluefield," Coach Hicks said to his team in the locker room.

Coming off a difficult game last week, Meadows had a good game rushing tonight, with one touchdown. "I’m trying every game to get better, to work hard," Meadows said.

Frank Cobbs and Calfee played together in the offensive backfield for the first game this season. "I’m back at 100%," said Calfee. "We had a good attitude, but didn’t perform like we said we were going to" commented Cobbs.

David Hale had several good solo tackles on defense and special teams. "We didn’t play well on special teams tonight," he said.

There was a scare with Roop’s neck injury. "The players tried to help me up but I felt numb from the neck down, and couldn’t lift my arms for them to help," Roop said.

The team doctor thought Roop would be all right, but very sore in the morning.
