Sophomore Josh Calfee had a career day rushing, but it wasn’t enough to balance Bluefield’s two-minute offensive drill. Sophomore Alan Wheeling had a good game in his first varsity start at QB, replacing the injured Travis Roop. Roop sustained two broken neck vertebrae late in last week’s loss to Salem.

The Cougars won the toss and chose to defer. The kickoff was returned by Donald Amaker to the PC 46. Bluefield punted 3 plays later. The Cougars drove to the Bluefield 19, but turned the ball over on a fumbled snap.

Bluefield brought the ball out to their own 29 before punting. Wheeling returned the punt 10 yards to the PC 49. PC scored on a 9-play drive, with a key 15-yard carry by Josh Calfee on 3rd-and-2 at the Bluefield 27. Calfee scored on a 4-yard sweep to the left. Paul Taylor’s PAT made it 7-0 PC with 1:43 left in the first quarter.

Amaker returned the kickoff to the PC 38. Four plays later, Bluefield scored on a one-yard QB sneak by Jarrod Sudduth. The PAT was good for a 7-7 tie with 11:56 left in the half.

The two teams exchanged punts after sustaining short drives. PC gets ball at the PC 20 with 2:58 remaining. On 3rd-and-3, Calfee carried for 28 yards to the Bluefield 45.

Six plays later, Taylor connected on a 31 yard FG with 8 seconds remaining in the half, giving PC a 10-7 lead.

Taylor deliberately aimed his kickoff out-of-bounds. The half ended as a Sudduth pass deep down the right sideline for John Patton was broken up by Wheeling.

Calfee returned the second half kickoff 14 yards to the 24. On 3rd-and-1 at the Beaver 45, Calfee carried for 14 yards to keep the drive going. Three plays later, Wheeling rolled to his left and threw the ball away just as he was sacked. A penalty was called on the play, but it was a facemask penalty on the defense, keeping the drive going.

Two plays later, Calfee would carry for 10 yards and a TD, getting a great block from Frank Cobbs. Taylor’s PAT was good for a 17-7 PC lead.

The Beavers took the kickoff back to their own 25. Bluefield scored two plays later on 78 yard TD run up the middle by Amaker. The PAT was no good due to poor snap, which did not even reach the holder. This left the score 17-13 PC with 3:43 remaining in the third.

The Cougars would start at their own 35 after the kickoff. Three plays later, PC would fumble the ball away on the exchange from center. The Beavers recovered at the Cougar 39.

Bluefield converted on 4th and 4 from the PC 34 with an 8 yard run by Tremayne Bennett. Sudduth capped the drive with a 2–yard QB sneak to make the score 19-17 Bluefield, with 9:57 remaining. The PAT attempt was kicked into the back of the offensive linemen, and was no good.

Calfee returned the kickoff 20 yards to the 25. On the next play, Calfee carried the sweep left for 22 yards, picking up a great block by DeWayne Burkes. "We’ve got some good plays where I’m out to block for Calfee", said Burkes after the game. Calfee appeared injured on the play, and would limp to the sideline. Fortunately, it was only a cramp, and after some hasty attention from the training staff, he was back in the game three plays later. On the next two plays, he would carry for 21 yards and then 13 more for the TD. Wheeling’s 2-point conversion pass over the middle was caught by Jeff King for a 25-19 Cougar lead with 6:41 remaining.

Amaker returned the kickoff to the 22. The PC defense would hold. The Beavers would punt. The punt rolled dead at the PC 25.

The Cougar would move the ball out to their own 42, where on 2nd-and-5, they were called for a crucial delay of game penalty. On 3rd-and-11, Cobbs would carry the criss-cross for 9 yards to bring about 4th and 2. PC punted. Bennett returned the ball to the Bluefield 31, with 2:37 remaining.

Bluefield’s two minute drill used a ‘trips left’ formation. On several plays, Sudduth would lateral to Amaker, behind two flanker blockers. Amaker then became the QB, having the option of throwing or running. He did both effectively.

With 1st-and-10 from the Bluefield 46 and 2:08 remaining, Sudduth threw a lateral pass to Amaker on the left, who then threw the throw back in true ‘Tom Landry playbook style’, to a wide open Sudduth in the right flat for a 39 yard gain to the PC 15.

The Cougars would burn their last timeout here.

On 3rd and 5 from the PC 10, Sudduth faked the lateral pass to Amaker, then threw directly into the defense to find the Tight End Patton for the tying score. David Orr’s PAT was good for the 26-25 lead with 1:04 remaining.

Calfee returned the kickoff to the 25. On 3rd and 5 with 22 seconds remaining Wheeling kept left out-of-bounds for the first down to stop the clock at the Beaver 42.Wheeling would then throw to Josh Bowling who stepped out-of-bounds at the Beaver 40 with 8 seconds left. Wheeling dropped back to pass but was sacked as time expired.

"I didn’t see any lack of effort. We have six games remaining. All we can do is suck it up and keep going. Our coaches will be working tomorrow to prepare us for Danville. Come back here Monday with character," Coach Hicks told his team after the game.
