The Locker Room
From The
Bleachers 2000: Friday, September 22 - G. W. Danville Eagles (Home): Series: G.W. Danville leads
7-6. The Cougars return triumphantly home to Dobson Stadium from a perfect road trip, having crushed E. C. Glass, conquered Salem, and blown out Bluefield. The average game has been 43-14, and the average start of the game has been 30-0! PC has come out of the gate strong in every game this year, and the margins have allowed second stringers like Sophomore Jeremy Porter opportunities to show what they can do. G. W. Danville started this season with a new coach, after the tragic death of Ed Martin in the off season. The Eagles lost their opener at Gar-Field, then shutout William Fleming and squashed Franklin County before being shocked at home by Patrick Henry last week. Danville still has TB Micah Knight (No. 45, Senior), who ripped the Cougars last season. This slashing running back will test the much improved Cougar defense. The roster for the Eagles shows that TB Kenny Lewis (No. 20, Sophomore) and FB Demetrius Jackson (No. 28, Junior) are back as well. The QB is Demar Fitzgerald (No. 11, Senior). The main page for the excellent Eagles website, run by Chuck Vipperman, is G. W. Eagles Football. If we don't have a link to an Internet broadcast of the game this week, try WBTM 1330. Week Four Review - Bluefield Beavers (Away): The Cougars jumped out to a 14-0 lead and
led 21-14 at the break before putting the game away with a 21-0 run in the second half,
cruising to a 49-21 victory. Calfee (19 carries, 186
yards) and Frank Cobbs (15 carries, 168 yards) led a ground attack that gained a whopping 477 yards and averaged 10.4 yards per
rushing attempt. Cobbs scored three times, Calfee scored twice, and Porter ran one in as well. Wheeling tossed a 27-yard TD
pass to Greg Cobbs. The score through the air saved what turned out to be
a sloppy series after driving to the 13, and it was a crucial
play, as PC was up by only 7 at the time. John Hedge was a perfect 7-for-7 kicking
PATs on the night. The Cougar offense made sure that Brandon Hamblin did not have
much work to do. He ended up with a single punt for 37 yards. |
