Week Four by Ardent Cougar Saturday, September 22 - William Fleming Colonels (Away): (Due to an unforeseen scheduling conflict, the game will be played on Saturday instead of Friday. The game time, as of this writing, will still be the usual 7:30pm.) Series: PC
leads 17-10.
Region
III District Standings
Same old foe, different district. For the 28th consecutive year, Cougars and Colonels will clash. With the breakup of the Roanoke Valley District, Fleming will now be the only team PC has faced every season. Once again, we make the trip to Victory Stadium, hopefully for the last time. Get that new stadium built quickly, Roanoke. This place has not been kind, in the last several years. The most recent occurence was two seasons ago, when officials robbed the Cougars of a deserved victory, and possibly the RVD title, or at least a playoff spot. I know of at least one optometrist who will be at the game this week. His services just might be needed, if the referees again go blind. There will also be at least one math teacher in the crowd, in case the zebras lose their respective abilities to count downs. Let's see... first down.... second down.... second down!? Last week, the Colonels went to Salem Stadium and gave the 3-time defending State Champions all they could handle, leading 7-0 most of the game, before falling 10-7. The Cougars have looked awesome, so far. Now, the tougher tests begin. Let's rock. (By the way,
if you are looking for something to do this Friday night, since we don't
play until the next night, go see Salem play at Blacksburg, and get a good
look at our next two opponents.)
Cougar Scoring
Stats:
Week Three Review - Friday, September 14 - Christiansburg Blue Demons (Home): One of these years, the Blue Demons will score on the Cougars. Maybe next season. For the second year in a row, PC set a school record for victory margin by plastering Christiansburg. Last season, it was 54-0. This year it was 56-0, and only a half-yard away from being 63-0. The score in 1999 was 51-0. After three games, the total score is 161-0. This one probably could have been 90-0, had not Coach Hicks done as he always does in these situations, getting second and third stringers needed game experience. Josh Calfee and Jeremy Porter both gained over 100 yards, but each could have had much more than that, if not for the Cougar defense and special teams stuffing plays (giving PC short fields), blocking a punt (Lucas Nester), and returning a punt for a score (Alan Wheeling). Wheeling had a pair of TDs, as did Calfee and Porter. Greg Cobbs and Derrick Burks added one apiece. John Hedge has kicked 24-for-24 PATs this season, and has punted scant few times. The defense did not let Christiansburg get a first down until the 3rd Quarter, and the Blue Demons never ran an offensive play in Cougar territory. The 42-0 halftime lead set school records for both points scored in a half, and the greatest halftime lead. What a way to
begin Blue Ridge District play!
