III District Standings
Having passed what should be their toughest tests (Fleming, Blacksburg, and Salem), the Cougars return to Dobson Stadium to take on a team they have not faced since 1977, the year Dave Brown had his only winning season as the Cougars' Head Coach. The Cavaliers started out with a 6-3 win over Patrick Henry, conquered Northside with a second half comeback, then breezed past Christiansburg. William Fleming spoiled LB's perfect season with a 22-13 win, then last week Blacksburg beat up on the Cavaliers 37-14. In that game, Botetourt QB Eric Driscoll was injured with a bruised calf. I don't know his status for this week. The Cavaliers like to pass a lot, often running their 'Run and Shoot' offense from the 'Shotgun' formation. So, expect to see something a little like we experienced against Christiansburg, but much better executed. Record-setting WR Jared White (who also kicks) is back this season, but I am sure that LB misses (also record-setting) QB Anthony Ford, who graduated in the spring along with a small handful of notable receivers. Defensively, I doubt they will do much to stop the Cougar rushing attack. I can easily see yet another game, where we don't throw a pass. Besides our own game, another important district encounter this week is Northside (a team hard to figure out this year) at Fleming (coming back strong after a rough start due to a tough early schedule). Both teams have a pair of district losses, and the Vikings (idle last week) have yet to play Salem, Blacksburg, or PC. Fleming has played two of those teams. This game will give a clearer picture of the playoff race. It
looks like at least 3 BRD teams will make the playoffs, and maybe 4.
Keep your eye on Liberty (1-0, 4-1) at Amherst (2-0, 4-2) this week.
Liberty is Division 3, Amherst Division 4. If the Minutemen win this
game, it will be almost certain that a Division 3 team will win the Seminole,
thus forcing Amherst to try for a wild card spot. The Lancers defeated
Fleming in the first week of the season, and only lost to Cave Spring 7-0.
Liberty lost to Northside 36-25, in the second week.

Two seasons, two trips up I-81, two defending State Champions, two victories. Maybe we should play in Salem Stadium every year! Just kidding. I doubt we've seen the last of the Spartans this year. Probably, we'll meet them again on November 16 or November 23 (if both teams make it that far, of course). Sometimes, pictures tell the story better than words.
