Cougars vs.
Blue Demons
by Ardent
Cougar
7:00pm
- The Cougars stand as one, as citizens across America light candles,
and
observe a minute of solemn silence in respect for all lives, both lost
to and touched by,
the
horrific tragedy in New York City.
The
Cougar keeps the candle lit,
shielding
it from harm.
Josh
Calfee leaps to pick off this pass,
setting
the tone for the contest.
Calfee
reaps the rewards, scoring from 4 yards out.
Cougars
up very early, 7-0.
Lucas
Nester is making a habit out of
blocking
punts. This one gave
the
Cougars another short field,
at
the Blue Demon 27.
With
Derrick Sartin (No. 58) leading the way,
Calfee
takes the pitchout from Alan Wheeling...
...
and pays another visit to the endzone.
I
wonder if that's where Josh gets his mail,
seeing
as how he spends so much time there.
PC
up 14-0.
Derrick
Burks (No. 22) sacks QB Matt Crumpton,
making
Christiansburg kick it away once again.
The
punt was okay this time, but...
...
the punt coverage was not.
Wheeling
stiff-armed a tackle attempt early in the return, went down the right sideline,
and
cut back to the middle, finding open spaces for a 58-yard score.
Cougars
21-0, scoring 3 times in the first 5:50 of the game.
Jeremy
Porter gets in on the act,
taking
it straight up the middle for a 40-yard TD.
It
was 28-0, with 3:55 still left in the 1st Quarter.
Wheeling
nearly scores again on another punt return,
but
his nice runback was nullified by a yellow flag.
After
a rash of penalties had PC in a 1st-and-30 hole,
Calfee
converts this 4th-and-4, nearly scoring from 35 yards out.
Wheeling
then capped the drive with a 3-yard keeper, making it
35-0
Cougars.
Some
years ago, Mississippi Valley State made this 'Trips Stacked' formation
work.
Of
course - they had Jerry Rice.
Following
a Matt Roan interception,
Greg
Cobbs shows his love for lots of 'elbow room'.
This
14-yard Criss-Cross play gave PC
its
biggest halftime lead ever, 42-0.
Porter
went right up the middle once again,
going
26 yards for his second score of the night.
49-0,
very early in the 3rd Quarter.
Derrick
Burks plowed over from 2 yards out with
4:01
left in the 3rd, and Coach Hicks "called off the dogs".
The
Cougars breezed to their greatest margin of victory, 56-0.
