Cougars at Spartans
by Ardent Cougar

This week's pictures might take a little longer to load than usual,
but it is well worth the wait.

On the opening drive, Jeremy Porter gets 20 yards
down to the Salem 27.

Josh Calfee (bottom left) gains 9 yards on this 3rd-and-8 play,
giving PC a first down at the Spartan 16.

Calfee (far left) converts this 4th-and-2, making it
1st-and-goal at the 5.
The Salem defense toughened, so it was up to...

... John Hedge, whose 25-yard FG
gave the Cougars a 3-0 lead.

After a pair of penalties left Salem in a hole,
Calfee picked off this 3rd-and-27 David Christanson pass,
and returned it to the Spartan 49.
The 1st Quarter ended a play later,
with PC leading 3-0.

Calfee gets 8 yards, converting a 3rd-and-6.

Porter goes left for a few yards.  On the next play,...

... he finds open spaces, and heads for the corner.

Touchdown!
Hedge's PAT extened the lead to 10-0,
with 10:33 left before halftime.

Alan Wheeling and several other PC enthusiasts thought
the Cougars had recovered a fumble, but Salem retained possession.

Calfee gained 24 yards on this pitch play,
before being knocked out of bounds at the Cougar 43.

Josh needed a break after that play.
Unfortunately for Salem, he would return,
with a vengeance.

Greg Cobbs on the criss-cross, almost breaking it, ...

... and not being tackled until he had reached the Salem 43.
Hedge kicked a 37-yard field goal with :04 left,
upping the lead to 13-0.

After the kickoff, Salem had time for one play.
Calfee broke up this 'Hail Mary' attempt, as time expired.
The Cougars were halfway home.

Nic Schmitt (a Va. Tech Hokie next year) barely gets off this punt,
after a low snap.

Speaking of punters, it's great to have
someone on your team like John Hedge.
Take note of where he punts this ball from, ...

... then, see where it ends up.

Wheeling puts the CRUNCH on Salem's David Lopez,
who miraculously hung on for the reception.

When you don't have time to pass, you won't get a lot of completions.
Matt Roan puts on the pressure, leading to a sack.

On the very next play, Roan and a host of Cougars get another sack.
Salem was thus faced with 3rd-and-11 as the quarter ended
with the score still 13-0 PC, and 12 minutes of football left.

Calfee breaks up this deep pass, forcing the Spartans to kick it away.

After the punt, it was 1st-and-10 at the Cougar 27.
Calfee started right, then cut back up the middle, headed for the sideline, and...

... GONE! This 73-yard scamper made it 19-0.
According to the Kick Chart, when up by 19,
you go for two. So,....

... Josh escapes a tackle in the backfield, and...

... as Derrick Sartin (No. 58) and Cougar Fans signal, it was good.
Cougars in command 21-0, with 11:28 left in the game.

The PC defense forced yet another Salem punt, which went for a touchback.
On the next play, Calfee breaks it up the middle, and turns on the jets.

Kyle Gilpin gave chase and lunged, but...

... Josh was not to be denied.
28-0 Cougars, with 8:46 to go.

QB Billy Cameron had about as much luck as Christianson.

Salem finally gets on the board.  Roger Waddell (center) breaks a tackle, and heads upfield.

Wheeling and Calfee give chase.
Josh did a great job of knocking the ball away from Waddell...

... but, the Spartans were able to recover in the endzone.
28-7, with 7:23 left.

Wheeling has Andre Hairston well covered.
Alan actually picked off this pass (the ball is at the top of the picture),
but was ruled out of bounds.

Salem did not mount any more threats, and it was over!

As did their respective teams and assistants, coaching greats
Joel Hicks and Willis White offered sportsmanlike handshakes.

All alone, atop the Blue Ridge District!
