A
big momentum swing:
Alan
Wheeling completes this long pass to Greg Cobbs.
Greg
gets hit on the play, and fumbles.
The
Rams recovered.
The
1st Quarter ended with Lafayette up 7-0.
The
Cougars had a tough time defending this type of play all game.
QB
Connor Hughes (No. 10) keeps left...
...
putting the Rams close to another score.
Hughes
finds Todd Reyher all alone in the endzone.
The
Rams now led 14-0.
Anderson
defends well on this pass play,
forcing
Lafayette to try a long field goal.
Hughes
also kicks for the Rams.
The
previous week against Liberty-Bealeton, his 49-yard field goal,
which
provided the only points of the game, set a Virginia AA playoff record.
Here
he does it again, tying the record, and putting Lafayette up 17-0.
Calfee
gets a nice return on the kickoff.
PC
had to kick it away.
John
Hedge's punt bounced inside the 5,
and
was downed at the 4.
Another
turnover.
Wheeling's
pass for Matt Roan was a little high,
the
ball going off of Matt's fingertips,
and
into the defender's hands.
Calfee
almost picked off this pass, but wasn't quite able to hang on.
Hughes
kicked another field goal, this one from 39 yards out.
20-0
Rams.
The
Cougar offense finally got some momentum, as the first half came to a close.

hauls in this swing pass, and moves the chains.
On
the next play, with just a few seconds left in the half,
Hedge
tried a 39-yarder, but it was just wide right.
The
Cougars headed for the lockerroom, to plan getting out of the 20-0 hole.
Something
said during the break lit a fire.
On
the first play after the second half kickoff,
Josh
Calfee awakened hopes, in spectacular fashion.
Touchdown!
From 87 yards out!!
The
PAT was blocked, but PC fans finally
had
something to cheer about.
20-6.
The
Cougar pressure made Hughes get rid of the ball early,
and
the pass was overthrown and incomplete.
A
stop on 3rd down set up a punting situation.
Hughes
meant to fake the kick and pass it instead, but found no receivers open.
He
had to scramble right, and get the punt off,
just
past the outstretched arms of Joey Radcliffe.
The
ball was downed at the 14, and the Cougars were once again in a hole.
Not
for long!
Jeremy
Porter breaks it up the middle, and
Calfee
(right) knows what's going to happen.
Lightning
strikes again!
Touchdown!
From 86 yards out!!
In
two plays from scrimmage,
the
Cougars had erased most of their deficit.
The
blowout was now a shootout!
20-13!
The
Rams converted just under two thirds of their 3rd down plays.
Hughes
connects with Charity, getting some momentum back.
Hughes
on the keeper, getting the ball deeper into Cougar territory.
On

The Rams lead was back to 14, at 27-13.
The
fireworks were not yet over.
Porter
takes the kickoff, and heads up the sideline.
Calfee
finds some open spaces, moving the ball down inside the 20.
3rd-and-goal
from the 7.
Calfee
takes the pitch right.
Touchdown!
27-20,
and the Cougars had the momentum,
as
the teams switched ends for the final 12 minutes of the season.
Following
another key third down conversion,
Charity
takes it right, and heads upfield.
The
59 yard run put the Rams up 33-20.
The
PAT was blocked, and though they were down by 13,
11:35
remained, and the Cougar offense had scored on three consecutive possessions.
There
was still plenty of time.
Turnovers
kill.
On
the first play after the kickoff, a Lafayette defender
gets
into the backfield, and interferes with Wheeling's handoff to Porter.
The
Rams recovered the loose ball, and were in point blank range.
A
few plays later, Levince Parrot took it in for a 2-yard score.
39-20,
and reality began to sink in.
Hughes
passed to Sintell Crew for the conversion. 41-20.
After
Lafayette's only turnover of the game, when the Rams were threatening to
score yet again,
the
Cougars had to move quickly.
Calfee
makes a difficult catch, getting the ball up to the 40.
On
the next play, Porter finds a hole up the middle, and turns on the speed.
Porter
takes it in on the next play, making it 41-26.
Wheeling
connects with Roan for two, making it 41-28.
Unfortunately,
only 2:55 remained, and a miracle was needed.
It
was not meant to be.
Lafayette
recovered the onsides kick.
Brandon
Anderson prevents insult being added to injury.
The
Rams would end the game taking a knee at the one.
Coach
Hicks accepts the Runner-Up trophy.
Many
players, coaches and fans of other teams, would kill for such.
It
wasn't quite the ending we hoped for, but it was a tremendous season!
