Just when you think the Cougars are dead, here they come! Maybe there is still hope for more than 10 games. Funny how ever since the first home game with the roped off student section, we've not lost. I think the incident that led to the creation of such a section, woke us all up. Well, a young team getting its bearings after a rough start and the unexpected losses of certain players, is the biggest story. To have any kind of shot at the playoffs, the Cougars must win out. That includes upsetting mighty Northside. First things first, though. We have a trip to make to Alleghany, where we have not played since the 1980s. The Mountaineers gave the Vikings one of their biggest scares of the season, actually leading in the 3rd Quarter, before falling late. I'm sure they remember last year's beating, just as Tazewell did. Don't take this one for granted. Let's get our road crowd there in force, and get loud before the opening kickoff. We've been a poor starting team for most of the season. When you get behind early, especially on the road, you can never tell what might happen. Let's do our part, to make sure nothing does! It took Joel Hicks 35 years of being a head coach, to reach 296 victories. The way the 2002 Season started out, one wondered if Joel might have some trouble getting the 4 wins he needed, to reach 300. Last Friday night at home in Dobson Stadium, the resurgent Cougars presented their great leader with a gift - an historic milestone, brought about by a comeback spurred by a super performance by Derrick Burks. Burks scored 4 times, and made an interception midway through the final quarter, that led to his game clincher. Derrick now needs 65 yards in the last two games combined, to reach the 1,000 yard mark for the season! Brandon Anderson slightly outgained Burks in terms of yardage (136 to 132). PC had the ball for nearly two-thirds of the game. For the third game in a row, the Cougars won the battle of turnovers. Ray McClanahan caused a fumble on a kickoff after a 3rd Quarter score (the one that gave PC the lead for good), which led to Burks' third trip to the endzone, which gave the Cougars enough points to win. With the hard fought and memorable win, PC finally got to an even record for the year, and kept alive both a shot at a winning season, and at least a theoretical chance at the postseason.
