Saturday, September 6 - William Fleming Colonels (Away):

Series: PC leads 18-11.
Streaks: William Fleming has won 4 of the last 6, after PC won 13 of 15 from 1982-1996, winning the last 6 in that stretch.  The Colonels won the first 3, and 5 of the first 8, at the beginning of the series (1974-1981).
Biggest Cougar Winning Margin: 32, 1994 (51-19)
Biggest Cougar Losing Margin: -25, 1980 (3-28)
Closest Game: 1988 Cougars 7, Colonels 6
Average Score: Cougars 20, Colonels 15.
Last meeting: 2002 at PC.  Result: Colonels 26-20. The Cougars came back to tie from 14 down, and almost came back again to win from 12 down, but fell short.  The playoff-bound Colonels held off a late PC rally, with an interception that killed Cougar hopes.  Fleming thus snapped a two game losing streak to PC.  This third home loss in three tries for 2002 left researchers scrambling to find out the last time a Cougar team had started out of the gate so poorly, within the friendly confines of Dobson Stadium.

It's got to be a good omen.

Joel Hicks began his Cougar career in 1979, with a shutout.

Twenty four years later, on a hot and muggy Friday night in August 2003, his successor duplicated that feat.

(By the way - you did notice that Joel and Jack both have four letters, and begin with 'J,' right?)

The Cougar D easily held Northside in check, and the Vikings were handed a humbling defeat - the third worst in the series.

It could have been worse.

Wasn't it great to see the play on the corners, stopping those wide plays that have been thorns in our side in recent years?

Let's hear it for Head Coach Jack Turner, and his Defensive Coordinator, Mr. Rodney Landreth!

(Wasn't it great to see not only the intensity, but also the humility, and the sense of humor, shown by our new leader?  This man is clearly living his dream.)

To keep things in perspective, this was not the 10-0 Northside team of a year ago.  The Vikings lost several 'skill' players to graduation.  Still, just about everything in this game felt good.

The offensive line did a great job, and the improved QB Britt Shumate operated without any real interference from the opposition.  He could have almost phoned this one in.

I do feel we will be better tested by Fleming.

Victory Stadium, here we come again.

This might truly be the last time, if plans for a new stadium go through.

Two years ago, it was 28-0.

If this does turn out to be a last hurrah for us, in the place that used to host the annual VPI-VMI battle, let's make it a good one.

Week One Review - Friday, August 29 - Northside Vikings (Away):

SHUTOUT!

Jack Turner's head coaching career got off to a booming start, and Pulaski County erased a good number of doubts, coming back from a 5-5 season.  The Cougars scored on their first three possessions, before the Vikings could settle down.  Brandon Anderson scored three times.  Derrick Burks and Ernie Hodge crossed the goalline once each.  Brandon and Derrick both rushed for over 100 yards.  Defensively, a hungry Cougar D smothered the Viking offense, and took the ball away three times.  PC played keep away, with no turnovers.  The 35-0 complete domination earned Coach Turner his first (and hopefully, far from his last) cold water 'bath' from his joyous squad.

IT'S TIME TO SHOW YOUR COUGAR PRIDE!!!!
By Cougardave

Friday night at Northside showed Roanoke a few things about Pulaski County and its fans.

First of all, Cougar football is back!!  Congratulations to Head Coach Jack Turner, his fine crew of assistant coaches, and the entire team on a great first win of the season and a great first win in his career as head coach.  I think I speak for everyone when I say we are all proud of the way you played the game and conducted yourselves.  One thing that I thought was really classy was how at the end of the game Coach Turner turned and saluted the crowd.  As a former player, he knows just how important it is to these kids that we had those stands filled up until the last play of the game.  People were screaming, yelling, waving flags, ringing cow bells, and eating hotdogs all night long on the visitors side of that stadium.  I also thought it was a class act that the Northside fans all seemed to stay till the end too.  That shows respect for their team and their program. I love to see that and I know it did to those players too.

Another thing I noticed was the energy.  Not just the team, but the fans, the cheerleaders, and the band.  Now normally Jeff is about the loudest one in the stadium, but I swear I believe there were some folks who beat him out.  Not many mind you, but a few.  It's great to see our community come together like it did that night.  But guess what.....the season ain't over folks!!!!   Now we move on to week two.......William Fleming.

Now last week I tried to talk a little about what the Cougars needed to do to beat Northside, and ended up realizing that's not what I'm all about.  Ardent Cougar fills us in on the pre-game stats like how many times we've beat each other and all that, and then he gives us a little history on the past few meetings.  I could go on talking about last week, but that's Pete Cougars job.  Just a note on Pete for those of you who don't know him......he might be a little guy, but he put away some ribs!!!  I was impressed at first, but then I noticed he wasn't eating anything once he got inside the stadium.  Pete, remember the new motto baby......."EAT TO WIN!!  EAT TO WIN!!!"   With that in mind, lets talk about William Fleming.

Victory Stadium in Roanoke on a Saturday night.  Now I know there are some really good people in Roanoke, but the decision has been made.......no grill for this tailgate.  Feel free to blame Scott Cougar and my friend Becky for that one.  They had me at a near jog leaving the Northside game Friday night, teasing me that someone had............I hate to even say it.............kidnapped the grill!!!   I was in a near panic state trying to get to the truck, fearing the whole time that I would get there and it would be gone.  Fortunately it was safe though, ready and waiting to get up to Dobson Stadium for the Patrick Henry game. So this Saturday we're gonna go with cold cuts and subs.  Anybody who wants to show up early and join us can come on down.  We play some good Cougar football music, eat some good food, and have a good time getting pumped up for the game. Now  William Fleming is no push over, so we can expect a good game.  Of course that also means we will have to eat a fair amount of hotdogs.  Remember, EAT TO WIN!!!

So with all that said, there is only one thing that needs to be added to this portion of Cougarfootball.net as far as I can see it.  We need to keep track of how good the hotdogs are at each stadium.  I think if we use a rating system of 1 through 10 (a 10 being an Allegheny concessions stand hotdog, a one being a very "misunderstood and mistreated" hotdog) then we can all get a good idea of how things stood.  Now I've been a bit lax in this on here, since I never really officially rated the hotdogs at the GW scrimmage or the Graham game, so lets start from the beginning.

GW Scrimmage...rating: 3.  They were ok, but the chili and the dogs were cold still.  Good use of onions!
Graham...............rating: 8.  Cooked on the grill, big smoked dogs, add your own fixin's, including slaw!!!
Northside.............rating: 5.  Good basic hotdog.  No frills, not too greasy, but they did call them "Viking Dawgs"!

Lets hope for a good night for football, good food, and a safe trip for everybody.  Now I know with this being a Saturday game sometimes attendance tends to drop, but folks we need to get out there!!!  Bring your neighbor, bring your friends, bring somebody from work!!  This stuff is habit forming!!  Lets get out there and make some noise to support our kids.

GO COUGARS!!!!!!   BEAT WILLIAM FLEMING!!!!!!!
