Friday, September 12 - Patrick Henry Patriots (Home):

Series: PC leads 19-10
Streaks: The Cougars have won a staggering 19 of the last 22 meetings, after losing the first 7 contests of the series.
Biggest Cougar Winning Margin: 42, 1990 (42-0), 2000 (56-14)
Biggest Cougar Losing Margin: -43, 1976 (7-50)
Closest Game: 1991 Cougars 24 Patriots 21, 1987 Cougars 15 Patriots 12, 1982 Cougars 10, Patriots 7
Average Score: Cougars 22, Patriots 16
Last meeting: 2000 at PC (Regional Semifinals)  Result: Cougars 30-13. With Frank Cobbs injured and on the sidelines watching, the Cougars had a much tougher start against the Patriots, than they had just a couple of weeks previous, in the battle of undefeateds.  Instead of 35-6 at the break, it was 7-7.  Antoine Meadows, playing in Cobbs' place, broke an 85 yard run for PC's only score of the half. It was still just 10-7 as the final 12 minutes began, but then PC got it in gear.  Jeremy Porter, Meadows and Alan Wheeling all scored, as the Cougars pulled away, leading 30-7 with under a minute to play.

One week, you think things are perfect.

Then the next week, you find out differently.

Last week's defensive war was a tough, tough one to lose.  The Cougar D certainly did its part.  Offensively, we just ran into an excellent defense against the run.  Fleming earned that win, the hard way.  They stopped us late, when their miscue/risk left them in a vulnerable position.

I just hope we're done with Victory Stadium.

Last week was the 30th Cougar-Colonel matchup.  We've played no other team more often.  In fact, every year in the existence of PCHS, there has been a game with Fleming.

This week, although it took a 2-year hiatus when the Cougars became AA classified, the PC-PH series will also this year produce a 30th game.  The playoff meetings in 1979 and 2000 made up for the regular season games missed.

It will be great to finally see Dobson Stadium again!  I have no idea how the new lighting is going to be.  I am anxious to find out.  With the scrimmage being held at Dublin Middle, the Foundation Game in Bluefield, and no Touchdown Classic, the absence from home has been noticeable.  After the game last Friday night, I spoke briefly with Coach Turner.  He echoed the sentiment.  This will of course be his first game at home, and I know that there will be a great crowd to greet the new leader.

Despite losing last week, the Cougar D is still looking good, giving up only 3 points a game.  Offensively, I think we will be able to more frequently mix things up, once we can get the timing down on the criss-cross.

Let's get out there Friday night, and make certain Jack knows how much we are behind him and the team.

Week Two Review - Saturday, September 6 - William Fleming Colonels (Away):

"The good hands people."

It sounds like an advertisement for an insurance company.  However, I am referring to the Fleming Defense.  The Cougars were able to move the ball some early, and missed some good opportunities, but PC had to scratch and claw for everything, because the Colonels were not giving up anything easily.  Derrick Burks and Brandon Anderson were not able to break any runs, like they did the previous game at Northside.  The Fleming Offense was not outstanding, but had just enough firepower to get into the endzone once, and because of that tough, stingy defense, it was enough.

PC had one last chance late in the game, when on 4th down around the WF 25, a bad snap on a Colonel punt play turned into an ill-advised fake (or was it planned?!?).  The incompletion left the Cougars in close range, and they got down inside the Fleming 10, before a 3rd down loss encouraged Head Coach Jack Turner to go for the field goal.  He was hoping that 2 timeouts and over 3 minutes to play would be enough for a defensive stop, and at least another field goal to send it into overtime. Fleming was able to move the chains once or twice, and that was all she wrote.  The 6-3 loss was the lowest scoring game (both teams combined) that PC has been involved in, since the 1996 7-0 victory at Amherst County.

LETS GET PUMPED UP FOR PATRICK HENRY!!!!
By Cougardave

I'd like to start this weeks article off with a few words about Saturday night.  First of all, I would like to congratulate William Fleming on a hard fought win.  You don't get too many games like this one.  Both teams were pumped and both teams worked there tails off on the field, but Fleming came out on top in the end.  For the Cougars, keep your heads up.  This was a good team, it was a hard fought game, we're all proud of you!!!  I've heard some people question some of the things that happened in the game.  I've heard some people say "we should have done this" or "we should have done that".  We all need to remember something very important here.  Our job is to support the kids.  We are not coaches.  I believe the Touchdown Club says it best when they say "The players play, the coaches coach, and we support them all".  There is no one to lay the blame on.........except me.

I did not eat to win.  I let my team down.  I wont offer an excuse, but I will explain what happened.  The bottom line is that there was a conspiracy.  I have never in my life seen something as horrible as what I saw at Victory Stadium this past Saturday.  There was a conspiracy afoot that puts all others to shame.  For those who were in attendance and sitting anywhere near me you know exactly what I'm talking about, because it was the main topic of discussion the entire game.  I cannot believe that the "powers that be" in Roanoke have stooped to this level. Folks, the hotdogs at Victory Stadium were horrible!!!  For those who missed  the game, let me explain it to you, but be warned.....its a horrible thing that you are about to hear.  The game started off normal enough.  I sent my friend Becky for two hotdogs and some drinks before kickoff, to insure a good start to the game.  After one bite, I knew things were bad.  Some may ask "Hey Dave, how bad were they?".  Folks, I gave my second hotdog away!!!!  I lived on "dots" ice cream and sweet tarts the rest of the night.   I cannot believe that these people went to this level to try to win a game.  People, I cannot tell you how this made me feel.  I tried to make up for the hotdogs with the ice cream, but it just wasn't the same.

We cant change the past, but we can try to shape the future.

This Friday night at Dobson Stadium will be the tailgate home opener.  I have already started to prepare.  I will make up for the lack of eating this past week.  To start with we will have homemade chicken and dumplings. These were requested by ScottCougars wife (demanded may be more accurate) and a few other folks, so that's a go.  I believe with this being the home opener we should also have the grill going, so I will put in a request for Tombstone to make some honey mustard sauce for me to use on some chicken. ScottCougar is still thinking what he wants to bring, but apple crisps are a must.  Tommy, I think we need to get serious here. I hate to ask again, but the potato salad may have been the key to victory big guy.  See what you can do. Anyone else, bring what you want, but bring it out early!!

We need to let these kids know we are pulling for them.  We need to let them know how much we appreciate all the hard work they have put in.  We need to get back to the basics of "eat to win"!!!  We need food!!!  Ya'll come out early and get pumped up and make some noise for the team.  I can't promise a win, but I will promise a belly full of some good grub.

GO COUGARS!!!  BEAT PATRICK HENRY!!!!
