Cougars by the Numbers

Dave Speaks

Hello again Cougar Fans, welcome back to this busy week on Cougarfootball.net!!

The Cougars finally got to play Patrick Henry on Monday, and came away with a great 28-20 win over a tough, hard playing AAA Patriot team.  A few notes from this game before we get into Franklin County.  First, it was great to get a win in Victory Stadium.  You never know from year to year if it will be your last time getting to play in such a historic arena, so its always great to come away knowing if this was the last time, you left it a winner.  Lets hope they make a decision soon to either do some long needed renovations to this great stadium, or go ahead with the plans for a new one.  It was also great to see the Cougars make the last big stand when they really needed it.  For a few years now, that last big stand to preserve a win seems to have eluded us more times than not.  Great job, great win, and now let's get ready to move on to action this coming Saturday against Franklin County.

The Eagle are a much improved team, again, coming into this matchup.  Franklin County comes into the game with a 2-1 record, with wins over Magna Vista and Martinsville, and a close loss to a strong Amherst County team.  The Cougars lead the series 24 games to 4.  They have won the last 14 meetings in a row, and have won 22 out of the last 23 games.  Franklin County is another AAA level school on the Cougars schedule, a school who we could really use a win over power points wise.  If Pulaski were to make the mistake, however, of taking the Eagles lightly, or if they cant focus on Franklin County during this short week of practice, then I could find myself writing a sad story after this Saturday nights game.  Pulaski has shown something this year though that we haven't seen in a few years though.

Pulaski County is playing like Pulaski County again.

Does anybody remember when teams walked off the field after playing Pulaski, and they hurt?  Anybody remember holding your breath on each defensive play to see who was going to make the next big hit?  Here's a good one for you: Who remembers what it was like when now Head Coach Jack Turner, along with folks like Michael J. Smith, Dickie Johnson,  and the Myers Brothers played?    It was a time of hard hitting, hard hitting, and hard hitting.  End of story. Coming from "up by the corn field" was something we were all proud of.  We were outcasts, and we liked it that way.

I think this team might have a little bit of that spirit in them now.  Maybe a few seasons of being kicked around has reminded us of what it was like back when we couldn't even buy some respect.  Lets see if the Cougars can keep that spirit alive, and continue to play with the same intensity they've shown to this point.

Our team is now 3-0.  It's been a while since we could say that, even longer since we could say 4-0.  Franklin County wants to make sure it's even longer.  Don't forget.....they come from up on the mountain too.

Lets get out and fill up that stadium this coming Saturday night!!  Its time for some more Cougar Football!!  Kickoff is at 7:30, I'd be willing to bet the hotdogs and BBQ will be ready even before that.

GO COUGARS!!!  BEAT THE EAGLES!!!!
