Cougars by the Numbers

Dave Speaks

Hello Cougar Fans, and welcome back to another week with cougarfootball.net.  Who's ready to get the second half of the season started?!  I don’t know about the rest of you, but I'm pretty excited about the way the next few weeks look.  Our Cougars have found themselves 5-0 at the halfway point, with some big wins over some great teams.  The Cougars are set up pretty well in terms of power points and strength of schedule and all that stuff, so now they just need to concentrate on district play.

But first........who got out there last week to check out the 16th Annual Powder Puff Football Game? Talk about a game, this was a wild time.  It was the Senior Class versus the Junior Class, and the gloves were off!!  This was almost a war from the get go.  Trash talk going on in the halls, calls made to radio stations, and just a general atmosphere of "LETS GET READY TO RUMBLE" all week.  The Senior class pulled the game out in convincing manner, winning it 60-21.  It was good to see the football team out cheering for their respective classes, and I even spotted Kevin Crouse doing a little cheer for one of the teams at one point (I wont say which one, I wouldn’t want to get him in trouble). Good job by both squads, and it was a beautiful night and great to see the large crowd that came out for the game.

Now lets take a look at what’s coming up for the team.

Last week was a relaxing week for the boys on the team, as they enjoyed their bye week and used that time to let some bumps and bruises heal up.  From all reports, most everyone should be back to near 100% come game time this Friday, with the possible exception of Steven Cobbs and Cab Cabaniss. These two may or may not play this Friday, depending on how things look this week.

This week the Cougars play host to the Hidden Valley Titans in Pulaski County’s Homecoming game.

The Titans come into the matchup with a 4-1 record, their only loss coming at the hands of Lord Botetourt.  The Cougars were dominant in last years first meeting ever between the two teams, winning the contest 46-6.  The Titans have a new face in the head coach position this year, as last year’s head coach Steve Magenbauer left to take over the reins of Salem High School. A lot of folks look at this team and expect Pulaski to roll over them, but that is just the kind of thinking that could cause the Cougars problems.  IF Pulaski County comes into this game and expects for Hidden Valley to just roll over, they will be sadly mistaken.  The Titans are working on building a program, and nothing would help them get some much needed respect more than a win over the Cougars. Its like I said the other week, the bullseye is back.

Pulaski County is going to have to play its absolute best every single game throughout the district schedule, because  teams like Hidden Valley want to play the role of the spoiler.  They want to be the ones to knock the Cougars off the top.  Pulaski is sitting in a good position right now, but they need to remain focused each and every week to take it all the way.  Our kids have the heart and the skill to get the job done, now lets see if they can go out there and do it.

I know I'll be there early, and with this being Homecoming week at Pulaski County High School, I'd like to extend a special invitation to everyone to come on out and see the game.  At our last home game, there was another type of Homecoming, and I feel like it's something I needed to mention in this weeks article.  It was very touching, for me at least, when part of the way through the third quarter in the Franklin County game, PA man John Freeman announced that he wanted to welcome back a local young man who had just returned from Iraq safely, and was in attendance at the game.  I don’t remember the young mans name, but what I do remember was the standing ovation given by BOTH sides of the field, and the players on the field turning and clapping as well.  Sometimes, homecoming means a little more.

Come on out and pull for the Cougars!!  Tailgating starts around 5, gametime is 7:30.  We'll see you there!!

GO COUGARS!!!  BEAT THE TITANS!!!!!
