Cougars by the Numbers

IT'S COUGAR FOOTBALL TIME BABY!!!!!

Hello folks, and welcome back to what is certainly THE MOST IMPORTANT WEEK YET at cougarfootball.net!!!

This is Pulaski vs. Salem.  The Cougars vs. The Spartans.  East vs. West.  North vs. South.  City vs. Country.

You name it, this game is all over it.  This is one of the best rivalries in the State of Virginia, and it is coming to Kenneth Dobson Stadium this Friday night.  Folks, we've got a lot to talk about for this game, but as always we need to take a minute to take a look back at last weeks action.

I talked last week about how many times Pulaski and Cave Spring have played close games.  Little did I know that this past weeks game would be another one of the great ones.  Cave Spring came out with a great game plan and executed it.  Pulaski never gave up, and made plays when they had too.   Every good team needs a little luck sometime or another, and Pulaski historically has not had this luck.  Friday night it was different though. Friday night the Cougars held the Knights to a field goal attempt in the final seconds of the game, and luck was with the Cougars.  Now I'm not sure about it, but if you look at my pictures of the kick, you'll also see several very large Cougar defenders bearing down on that young kicker as he made his attempt.  I don't know if this defender got a hand on the ball for sure or not, but if he didn't, he was close enough at least to get the kickers attention for sure.  Great job by the team, and it was a great win.  Now, lets get into what we really want to talk about.

People, it just don't get no better than this!!  This is what you have been working for since the start of two a days back in August/September.  This is why you ran all those fifths after practice, spent all that time in the weight room over the summer, and spent all those nights with sore, cramped muscles after having a hard practice.

This is what the powers that be wanted when they scheduled this game as the last game of the season.  This game is what High School football is all about.   This is the type of game and the type of rivalry that movies are made of.

Pulaski County Cougar football players, in case this has not sunk in yet, let me explain it all for you.

This game is for all the marbles.  This game is for the River Ridge District Title.  This game is for a shot at the playoffs.  If you win this game, you will get that District Title that you've been chasing for so long.  This is your shot at making the playoffs.  A win will get you in for sure, a loss could mean turning in your gear on Monday. For you seniors, that means this could be the last time you ever put on that gold helmet and walk down those steps.  This could be the end of it all, or it could be the start of a run for the title.  We don't have to put off talking about it any more.  Its now or never time.   Pulaski County's playoffs start this Friday night, and you may as well consider it a must win situation.  How many times has it come down to Pulaski vs. Salem?

Pulaski leads this series 16 games to 10,   Salem won last years contest at Salem by a score of 23-7.  The Spartans come into contest with the same 8-1 record that the Cougars hold.  The Spartans lost to Christiansburg in a thrilling come from behind win for the Blue Demons on the same week that the Titans of Hidden Valley came into Dobson Stadium and ruined homecoming.  I just really don't think there is anything else I can say or write that will bring  any more importance to this game.

THIS IS YOUR SEASON PULASKI COUNTY!!

The problem is, this is also the season for the Salem Spartans.  Pulaski County has a slim chance of making it in with a loss, but it would take a lot.  To quote one source from Virginia Preps "The Cougars need to beat Salem to assure themselves of a berth. If they win and Northside, Fleming and Cave Spring all win, then they will be the top seed. A loss plus those three teams winning and Amherst losing would still get the Cougars in as the three (or maybe even two) seed."  We need a win, we don't want to have to depend on someone else.

So here we are.  The countdown is on for the biggest game in Pulaski County AND Salem's season. I wouldn't have it any other way!!

This will be the largest crowd of the season,  it don't matter how cold it gets, this will be a packed house. Tailgating starts at around 5:30 for most, but the student section will be starting its tailgating early, so I will be there early too.  Feel free to stop by the big green Dodge and say hello, more than likely we'll have some food ready when you get there.

ITS COUGAR FOOTBALL TIME BABY!!  ITS TIME TO GET OUT AND MAKE SOME NOISE FOR THE "PRIDE OF PULASKI COUNTY"

GO COUGARS!!!!   BEAT THE SPARTANS!!!!!!
