Pulaski County senior
lineman Adam Adkins put his name on the line today, joining a long line of
Cougar Football players who have moved on to play at the next level. After
graduation he will be spending the next four years playing for the Glenville
State College Pioneers.
Adkins will be receiving a combination of
"football money", or Athletic Grant-in-aid funds, and federal Academic
grants to pay his way. He currently has a 3.75 GPA and is ranked #58 out of 312
students in his senior class. He is currently continuing his classroom work,
taking a combination of Honors classes, Level 3 Classes, and other Advanced
classes while having a pretty impressive season on the wrestling mat. Adam also
scored an impressive 1540 on his SAT exams. When we gathered at the field house at around
noon on Friday for Atkins to sign the papers with his Mother, Father, and Sister
by his side, Cougar Head Coach Jack Turner was very pleased to see his former
lineman getting a chance to further not only his football career, but his
education. "Adam has been an outstanding
student-athlete for the past four years. The type of character he demonstrates
are his strong points. They (Glenville State) are very lucky to be getting a
young man with the work ethic and drive he shows on the field, in the weight
room, and in the classroom." Today was also a chance to look back and remember
some of the early days when Adkins first got into the Cougar Football program.
"I remember when he first started coming up here between his 8th and 9th
grade year. He was having a lot of trouble just working out with the 45 pound
bar" his dad pointed out. Adam isn't having that problem now, with a bench
press max last year of over 400 pounds. There are still several other Cougar players
looking at college choices. As they make their decisions we will keep you posted
here. Just to take a moment to update you on former Cougars who are currently in
the college ranks: -Rashad Simmons is getting ready to start his
sophomore year at Morehead State. He wears #53 for the Eagles. -Steven Cobbs is also getting
ready for his sophomore year at Lenoir Ryne. He got a chance at a good bit of
playing time as a freshman, and is expected to start next season. -Brandon Anderson will be a
sophomore at Akron University this year. He got a chance to shine this past year
as the Zips made their first trip to a bowl game, and he made a big tackle to
prevent a first down late in the game. -Ernie Hodge has signed with the Ohio University
Wildcats, and has reported for class. So far he is loving the school environment
and cant wait for spring ball to start. -Jeff King recently closed out his stellar career
with the Virginia Tech Hokies. Expect to see him playing on Sundays. -Matt "Tater" Roan is playing for the
Southern Utah Thunderbirds -Former Cougar standout Timmy Davis is coaching
now. Coach Davis is coaching at a private Christian School in Texas, where he
resides with his wife. I'm sure there are a few I've missed here and
there, feel free to drop me a line
if you have details on someone I didn't add to the list. |
