Cougars Win River Ridge, 34-24
PERFECTION
ACHIEVED First
of all, I'm glad I'm typing this because I really don't have a voice left. WHAT
A GAME!! The
Pulaski County Cougars finished their 2008 regular season with a PERFECT 10-0
record, handing the Salem Spartans only their second regular season River Ridge
District loss in 23 games, and only their 4th loss in that same
amount of time overall. Not
only did the Cougars win tonight, but they did it in dramatic, come from behind
fashion as well. Down 17-7 at the half, the Cougars came out and stopped the
Spartans cold on their first drive of the second half, then drove the ball down
the field to come within three points. The Spartans didn’t give in though, and
put another score on the board minutes later to go back up by ten a little over
midway through the 3rd quarter. That’s
when the explosion happened. Pulaski
County came out to score three unanswered touchdowns to put the game away. First
Luke Watson kept the ball on an option right, and went 64 yards to the promised
land and pull the Cougars back to within three points of Salem. Five minutes
later, Peak took the ball off the right side on a sweep to go three yards into
the end zone, putting the Cougars up by four points with 11:53 left in the game.
The Cougar defense stepped up to the plate next, and after the Spartans started
a drive, Pulaski held tough on a third and long, forcing Salem to punt. Just a
few plays later, Nubian Peak took the ball off the left side of the line, hit
the corner, hit the clutch and slipped his motor into sixth gear and streaked
towards the end zone going 43 yards for the final nail in the coffin. The
Pulaski County Cougars are the 2008 River Ridge District Champions!!! The
students and fans stormed the field as time expired, and it was only fitting as
this team and its fan base have pulled together over the past few years of hard
times. To be together…..and to celebrate together for that brief few moments
before the end of game handshake….seemed only fitting. Head Coach Jack Turner
was carried onto the field in victory, as is the tradition at Pulaski County
High School. In
the locker room after the game, Coach Turner said it best. “Men you don’t
realize how happy I am. Not for myself, but for you and for this program. You
seniors came through a 2-8 season as sophomores where we lost two great friends,
and turned that around and made the playoffs last year, and now you’ve earned
a perfect season and another playoff berth this year. What a show of
character.” Coach
Turner went on to remind the entire team of what this win means. “You came
back from a being down at the end of the first half, and you fought your way
back. You beat the 4 time defending District Champs. The sky is the limit. Each
week this season we’ve looked for the trophy after the game, and there
wasn’t one. This week, there is. Now we start getting ready for next week and
Blacksburg.” Pulaski
County will now move on to round one of the Region IV playoffs, facing the
Blacksburg Bruins, who defeated Christiansburg in a come from behind, last
minute win. The game will be next Friday at Kenneth J. Dobson Stadium, with game
time set for 7:30 pm. Congratulations to our Cougars!!
