Cougars Dominate Spartans, 38-0
Game
Article Pulaski County came
out and recovered a fumble by the Salem kickoff returner on the opening kickoff,
but were unable to cash in on it. It was one of the few times on the night that
the Cougars weren’t able to put the ball in the endzone as the Cougars went on
to win the Region IV Title 38-0 over Salem. The Cougars, now
12-0 on the season, finished with 350 yards of total offense, while Salem
was held to 86 total yards in what turned out to be a very physical game on a
very cold and windy night. Running back Nubian Peak finished with
221 yards on 22 carries, and E.J. Dobbins tallied 69 yards on 12 carries.
In all, nine different Cougar backs carried the mail on the night. The
Spartans were led by #23 Dyer, who had 5 rushes for 26 yards. Passing for
Salem, Sturgill went 5 for 16 for 33 yards, but the big story of the night was
defense, as the Cougars intercepted two Salem passes. In the second
quarter, Antwyn Calfee broke on a Sturgill pass, beat the receiver to the punch,
and took the ball to the endzone. Later, Zane Quesenberry picked off his
8th pass of the season to tie the Cougar season interception record held by
several former players. Salem ends its season with a fine 9-3 record. Now the Cougars prepare for the Amherst Lancers. This should be an awesome game and an incredible atmosphere for a high school football game. Amherst defeated Jefferson Forest 42-10 to advance to the semi-final game, which will be held at Kenneth J. Dobson Stadium next week. At this time, the game is schedules for Saturday, but school officials at Pulaski are attempting to get that game moved to Friday at 1:30 to avoid conflicting with the Virginia Tech vs. Virginia game on Saturday.
