Begin Road Trip
The Pulaski County Cougars begin a road trip this week that will last until almost the middle of October, and it all starts out with what could be an extremely tough contest against the undefeated Jefferson Forest Cavaliers.
Hello again Cougar fans, and welcome back to another week here at cougarfootball.net. Last week was a HUGE week for the Cougar Football program. Not only did we get a chance to FINALLY and properly thank our former Head Coach, Joel Hicks, for his years of service and contributions to our program and community, but we also got an extremely important win against Franklin County, a AAA Division 6 opponent that gives us a great shot in the arm power points wise.
Pulaski County is currently ranked #1 in Region 4, Division 4 with 24.66 power points. Bassett and Blacksburg sit at #2 with 22.0 points each, followed by Christiansburg with 21.0 and Salem with 19.33 points. Abingdon is in the wings with 14.66 points, and Hidden Valley has 14.33. Magna Vista and Carroll County round out the top of the pack with 10.5 points each.
Needless to say, continuing their winning ways would be of great benefit to the Cougars.
Pulaski County heads toward Lynchburg this week, as they go back to the scene of the emotional win in 2006, when the Cougars traveled to face the Cavaliers just days after the passing and funeral of Kenneth J. Dobson. It was a bittersweet win that night, as the kicks from Coach’s last kicker Ben Buckland made the difference in the game that night. When Ben took the field that night, he had his last weekly “report card” from Coach Dobson in his helmet as a reminder of what he was supposed to do. The Cougars pulled out a 16-9 win that night, one of only two we would enjoy that season as the Cougars went 2-8.
Pulaski County leads the series with Jefferson Forest 3 games to none. The 2006 game was the closest the Cavs ever came to beating the Cougars, but this could be a different Jefferson Forest team this season. JF comes into the contest with a fine 3-0 record. That’s right, they’re undefeated. They’ve got a 44-17 win over Staunton River, a 40-6 win over Rockbridge, and a 20-0 win over E.C. Glass last week. The Cavs are big, they are fast, and they are healthy. What’s even worse is that they are starting to believe in themselves. Make no mistakes about it folks, this team can beat Pulaski County, and they WANT to beat Pulaski County.
The Cougars bring the same lineup from last week into the game. Ramell Cobbs is out for now, and most likely for the season with a torn ACL. There has been a rumor going around that Nubian Peak may not be available this week due to an injury. At this time, that rumor is unsubstantiated, but if he is out it would certainly give the Cougar coaching staff a chance to see what the team can do without a key player in the lineup. Otherwise you’ve got a healthy team headed up I-81 North this Friday in what should be one of the tougher games so far this season.
If you’ve never been to a distant away game, let me assure you that only the best fans usually make these trips. You’ll be pleased to find a group of fans that truly want to get out and support the team and coaches. They are loud, they are Cougar proud, and they get into the games. Come on out and make some noise this week for the Cougars as they fight through one of the last two games on their out of district schedule.
It’s Pulaski County vs. Jefferson Forest, and it should be one heck of a Friday night fight!!
