Vikings Overpower Cougars, 33-20
Game
Article The Cougars put up a good fight tonight in Roanoke, but the size difference eventually caught up with them as the Cougars fell to the Northside Vikings by a final score of 33-20. The Vikings struck first with 2:51 left in the first quarter, when Phillip Scott hit the hole and took off through the center of the Cougar defense for a 47 yard touchdown run. Northside struck again with 1:46 left in the second quarter, when Tyler Fisher took the ball in from 14 yards out. The Cougars started to move the ball near the end of the half, and after calling a time out as time was running out, Pulaski got one more play in the first half. Quarterback Luke Watson scrambled, and then sent the ball to the endzone to a waiting Cougar receiver. Pulaski was called for an illegal receiver downfield though, and the half ended with Northside up 14-0. Pulaski came out and kicked the ball off to start the second half. On the next play, the Vikings fumbled the ball and the Cougars recovered. Trey Smith took the ball on a long run on the next play, and then with 11:30 left in the third Rammell Cobbs took the ball into the endzone from 8 yards out. The Matt Songer PAT was no good, leaving the score at 14-6. Northside got the ball, and after a few plays moving the ball for a couple of short first downs, Phillip Scott took the ball long again, rambling 61 yards to paydirt. The missed PAT put the score at 20-6 in favor of the Vikings. The Vikings would score again in the third quarter, when Dustin Phelps took the ball in from 9 yards out with 2:12 left on the clock. Another missed PAT put the score at 26-6. Northside would get one final score in the contest, when Phelps took it into the endzone again with 9:36 left in the 4th quarter. The PAT left the score at 33-6 in favor of the Vikings. Pulaski County didn't give up though, and started putting together some offense of their own. After a sustained drive down the field, Luke Watson dove into the corner of the endzone from 4 yards out with 3:53 left in the game. The Songer PAT put the score at 33-13. Pulaski wasn't done for the night, and after getting the ball back, they drove the ball down the field again. With 14 seconds left on the clock, Luke Watson scrambled, and found Chase Cook open down the visitor side of the field for a 30 yards touchdown reception. A final PAT by Matt Songer put the final score on the board, as the Cougar fell 33-20. The Cougars learned some valuable lessons tonight, and for anyone that was with the team after the game, it was obvious they didn't like being on the losing end. Before going off the field, the team gathered around the Cougar flag with helmets raised. Senior Josh Lambert, who was back for his first action since the Tazewell scrimmage, said "alright, we know what it feels like now...lets not feel like this again". Rather than acting down about their loss, the team seemed to be eager to get ready for their next game. This could very well be the wake up call that this young team needed to be the "team" that the coaches feel they can be. One thing is for sure......Pulaski County is going to continue to get better. The Cougars start getting ready for Patrick Henry on Monday, and they are ready to walk down the 63 steps of Kenneth J. Dobson Stadium and walk onto the newly repaired playing surface of Joel Hicks Field for the first time this season. Be ready to be there Cougar fans....this Friday our Cougars finally come HOME!!!
