Cougars Fall Victim to the Lancers
Game
Article The Amherst Lancers proved why they are the #1 ranked AA team in the State Friday night as they racked up 367 total yards of offense while holding the Cougars to 97 yards as they hand Pulaski County their third loss of the season 33-10. After the Cougars were forced to punt on their first drive, Amherst took their first drive a short distance and then fumbled the ball. Pulaski County's Tommy Wojcik came out of the pile with the ball, and the Cougars were back in business. Unfortunately, the Lancer defense proved to be stingy all night, and the Cougars were forced to punt again. The Lancers started to move the ball against the Pulaski defense, but the Cougars held their ground on third down and forced Amherst to settle for a field goal from 38 yards out. In the second quarter the Lancers found their offensive footing, and started getting the ball down the field. They were also able to keep the Cougars pinned deep inside their own territory most of the half, which set Amherst up with excellent field position. The Lancers were able to score on a 14 yard touchdown run, a 15 yard pass, and a 6 yard run before finishing out the half with a 42 yard field goal with only 47 seconds left in the half. The Cougars came out and kicked off in the second half, pinning the Lancers back inside their own 3 yard line. On the next play, Tyler Cole came in and tackled the Lancer runner in the backfield, securing a safety and two points for Pulaski to put them on the board, putting the score at 26-2 in favor of the Lancers. That would be the only scoring in the third quarter, as both teams held each other in check. Amherst had a good drive going, but fumbled the ball into the end zone where it was recovered by Taylor Akers for a touchback. In the fourth quarter Amherst took the ball into the end zone for one more score to bring their points tally up to 33, but the young Cougars didn't give up. With the ball inside their own 5 yard line, Pulaski County took the ball and drove it the length of the field against the Lancers, putting a touchdown on the board with just 27 seconds left in the contest. After a successful two point conversion, the Cougars lined up for an onside kick attempt and got a good bounce. The Lancer defense held, however, and the game ended with the Lancers winning 33-10. While the Cougars did fall in the contest, Pulaski found some good things out about themselves. Several players did well on the defensive front, and even though they were down on the scoreboard the team continued to fight throughout the entire game. Amherst showed that all of the hype was deserved, as they were able to move the ball well on offense and get to the ball quickly on defense. The Lancers tackled well and didn't give up after the first hit. I would expect them to go far in the playoffs. In the locker room after the game, Coach Turner made it very clear to his team that everything that has happened to this point is now behind them. "We have five games left in our regular season. This week, your begin to defend your district title. Every team in the River Ridge District is now 0-0. We have five district championship games. What you do for the rest of this season will define who you are." Pulaski will open district play at home next Friday by hosting the Christiansburg Blue Demons. Christiansburg comes into the contest with a perfect 5-0 record. Check back later for more information on this match up.
