Cougars Toppled by Titans
Game
Article It was a record setting
night in several ways Friday night as the Pulaski County Cougars lost to
the Hidden Valley Titans, and unfortunately for Pulaski most of
those records were not set by the Cougars. Hidden Valley running back
David Williams rushed 41 times for 380 yards and four touchdowns as the
Titans defeated the Cougars 35-14. His 380 yard effort is more than
likely the most yards ever gained by a single rusher against a Pulaski
County defense, and it also put Williams over the 2,000 rushing yard mark
for the season with two games left in Hidden Valley's regular season.
The Titans finished the contest with 451 yards rushing as a team, which
most likely will also be a record against a Cougar defense.
Overall the Titans finished the game with 475 yards of offense. Pulaski County hung tough
in the first half, as both teams went into the locker room for the
halftime break with the score tied at seven each. Williams had
rushed the ball well to this point, gaining around 140 yards, but the
Cougars had been able to keep the Titans out of the endzone on all but one
drive. Pulaski had also moved the ball well during the first half,
but the second half saw the tide turn. The Cougars took the second
half kickoff and drove down the field to score on a 47 yard pass play from
quarterback Luke Watson to #15 Tyler Matusevich. The score gave the
Cougars their only lead of the game, but it was short lived as the Titans
scored two and a half minutes later to put the scored tied again at 14-14.
Hidden Valley got a break and recovered a Cougar fumble shortly after
that, and with just over two minutes left in the third quarter Williams
took the ball into the endzone for his third touchdown of the night.
Williams would add another score early in the fourth quarter to put the
Titans up by 14, and with just over three minutes left in the contest the
Titans put the game on ice with a seven yard td run by #20 Stanley. The loss drops the Cougars
to 0-3 in the River Ridge District and 2-6 overall on the season, with
Blacksburg coming to visit the Cougars next Friday and the regular season
finale in Salem the following week against the Spartans. While things certainly
didn't go the Cougars way tonight, there were a few positive items to
note. First, #17 Austin Cox recorded another interception for the
Cougar secondary, stopping a late second quarter drive by the Titans.
Second, in the first half quarterback Luke Watson broke the all time
passing record with first completion of the night to Tyler Matusevich.
Watson’s 161 yard passing effort puts him at 1,566 passing yards, which
breaks the old record of 1,435 yards which was held by former Cougar
standout Tim Venable. Check back later for more information on the upcoming final home game of the season against the Blacksburg Bruins this coming Friday night. The Bruins fell to Cave Spring this week by a final score of 27-19.
