Bruins Trick Cougars
Game
Article Pulaski County was held to 10 first downs on Friday night as the Blacksburg Bruins scored two second half touchdowns to defeat the Cougars by a final score of 34-3. Blacksburg took control of the game early after recovering a fumble, then scoring a touchdown on a long pass play and then another touchdown on the ground in the first quarter. Stunned but not done yet, the Cougars started to mount some offense, but had to settle for a 30 yard field goal from Matt Songer early in the second quarter. Blacksburg scored again on an 11 yard run with just over three minutes left in the half. After holding the Cougars, the Bruins took a knee to end the first half. Pulaski was unable to get the offense going again in the second half, as turnovers continued to haunt the team. Blacksburg turned more conservative in the second half, and was able to run the ball up the gut for the most part and work the clock. The Bruins scored with 1:40 left in the third quarter, then again with 6:11 left in the fourth quarter to lock up the win. The Bruins, now 3-6 on the season, most likely locked up a spot in the Region IV playoffs tonight, as Bassett was defeated by Patrick County. Blacksburg will face Christiansburg next week, as the River Ridge District "Rivalry Week" brings the regular season to a close. Cave Spring will face Hidden Valley next week, and Pulaski County will face the Salem Spartans at Salem. With the playoffs now presumably out of reach for Pulaski County, next weeks game will be played for nothing more than PRIDE. The Cougars are going into the game with nothing to lose, but they could gain a measure of self respect. The senior class will be putting on the gold helmets for the last time, and it wouldn't be the first time an over matched Cougar team has played above themselves to steal a win that nobody thought they could earn. Be sure to check back later in the week for the Salem game preview.
