Two Former Cougars Participate In Virginia Tech Spring Practice
Cam Akers, who wore #54 for Pulaski County and was a senior on the 2007 Cougar team that finished the season 7-4 and made the Region IV playoffs, has made the cut so far as a walk on for Frank Beamer's squad, and is working hard to earn a spot on the roster. Akers finished his senior season as an All-River Ridge District performer, and would like to at least make a special team for the Hokies as he continues to learn and grow. "I'm taking every opportunity to get involved that I can get" said Akers. "I wish I weighed a little more, but hopefully I can work on that as I go." Nubian Peak, who formerly wore #5 for the Cougars, was a senior for the 2008 Cougar team that finished the regular season with the fourth ever perfect regular season in the programs history and made it all the way to the State semi-finals before falling to Amherst. Peak finished his Cougar career as the second leading rusher in program history (3,366 yards), the third leading receiver in program history (620 yards), the most total yards in a single game (297 yards vs. Christiansburg in 2007), and the #5 scorer in Cougar history (248 points). Peak, who received a full athletic scholarship from the Hokies, is currently fighting for a higher position in the depth chart at the receiver position. "We are really proud of both of these guys" said Pulaski County Head football coach Jack Turner. "These guys are examples of what can happen when a young person is willing to work hard and do their best. We'd sure love to have them back for another year with the Cougars, but Coach Beamer will have to take care of them now. We wish them both the best of luck and will be pulling for them from the stands." Virginia Tech will continue with its spring practices through Saturday April 24th, when they will have their annual Spring Game at Lane Stadium. They will also have smaller scale scrimmages on Saturday April 10th and 17th. The public is invited to attend, but there are restrictions for those that come. No video recording devices are allowed at these scrimmages, and the public will only be allowed to sit on one side of the stadium. For more information, be sure to visit www.hokiesports.com. |
